Are you taking the time to update your website software? If not, you are leaving your website vulnerable to attacks.
Many websites today use some form of third party software. Unfortunately, many website owners do not stay on top of updating that software to keep their website as secure as possible. It is critical that any third party software being used on your website is updated regularly. This would include any content management systems such as WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, etc, any plugins, themes, separate software you have purchased for specific functions and your server software.
Security updates for software are created in order to fix security vulnerabilities that are found in the software. By not updating to the latest software version, you are leaving known vulnerabilities open for possible attack.
So take the time to stay on top of software updates by knowing what you are using on your site. If it helps, create a spreadsheet that lists all of the software that you are using, when it was last updated, and to what version. Additionally, set a monthly reminder to do a check for any new versions that have been released and need to be installed. And if this is not something you feel comfortable with yourself, follow up with your website developer to make sure this is being done regularly. Doing so will allow you to stay on top of your updates and keep your website as secure as possible.
